Yes, it is possible to join a group chat via IRC. However you will have to connect to different servers to join them. You can make a request via http://chatdepot.twitch.tv/room_memberships?oauth_token=TOKEN_HERE to get the informations about the available group chats.
The feature is still in beta, so the code may change a little bit.
